For 100 years, Patisserie Valerie has helped make birthdays sweeter. Since Theo and Esther opened their first Belgian patisserie in Soho in 1926, our cakes have been shared at celebrations for generations.

From Soho in 1926 to 100 Years of Celebrations

Patisserie Valerie’s story began in 1926, when husband-and-wife team Theo and Esther opened a Belgian patisserie in Soho, London. Theo handcrafted cakes and pastries using Esther’s grandmother’s treasured recipes, while Esther—fondly known as Madame Valerie—welcomed guests with warmth and charm.

A century later, that spirit lives on in cakes shared at birthdays today. Our Centenary Collection brings together a special Black Forest centrepiece, much-loved gateaux and colourful modern favourites for celebrations of every size.

1926 — A Shared Love of Cake

Belgian pastry chef Theophile “Theo” Vermeirsch and Esther Van Gyseghem moved to London with a shared love of fine patisserie. From their Soho shop, Theo’s handcrafted cakes and Esther’s warm welcome shaped the Patisserie Valerie customers came to know and love.

2026 — Celebrating Our 100th Birthday

To mark our centenary, we created the Luxury Black Forest Gateau with Kirsch: a two-tier celebration cake layered with chocolate sponge, cherry-kirsch syrup, kirsch-infused fresh cream and cherry fruit filling, then finished with dark chocolate and Amarena cherries.

Serving approximately 24 portions, it sits at the heart of this collection alongside the classic Black Forest Gateau and the cakes customers choose for birthdays today.
